Dodge Hornet R/T's Innovative Hybrid-Electric Powertrain Clinches Spot in Wards 10 Best Engines of 2023

The 2024 Dodge Hornet R/T, Dodge's first foray into electrified performance vehicles, is now distinguished as a recipient of the 2023 Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion Systems award. This marks the seventh straight year that a Stellantis product has earned a place on this highly respected list.

At the heart of the Hornet R/T is a state-of-the-art powertrain that melds a 1.3-liter turbocharged I-4 engine with dual electric motors. The combined system yields an impressive 288 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Further enhancing its capabilities is a 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, enabling the vehicle to achieve over 53 km solely on electric power.

One of the standout features of this powertrain is the PowerShot performance boost. This technology delivers an additional 30 horsepower, notably reducing the 0-60 mph time by 1.5 seconds via 15-second spurts of extra energy from the battery and electric motor. It's an attribute that solidifies the Hornet R/T as the quickest and most powerful utility vehicle in its class.

Bob Gritzinger, editor-in-chief at WardsAuto and a judge for the awards, stated, "This powertrain is a joy to drive in most situations.” Micky Bly, Stellantis' head of global propulsion systems, also noted that the 1.3-liter turbo PHEV opens a "new chapter for performance" and is a key part of Stellantis' broader electrification strategy.

With this award, the Hornet R/T's powertrain further exemplifies the significant role that hybrid and electric systems play in Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 plan, aiming to substantially reduce the company's global carbon footprint.

Overall, the Dodge Hornet R/T's innovative powertrain sets a new benchmark for performance and efficiency, receiving well-deserved recognition in the automotive industry.
