A look at the different Jeep all-wheel drive systems

Jeep is known for the performance of its all-wheel drive systems and the off-road capability of its vehicles. That said, different Jeep models have different all-wheel drive systems. Here’s an overview of these various systems offered on the different 2021 Jeep vehicles.

2021 Jeep Wrangler and 2021 Jeep Gladiator

The Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator share essentially the same setup for their 4x4 systems. These systems are by far the most competent of the entire Jeep lineup.

Command-Trac 4x4

Command-Trac 4x4 is designed for both off-road and on-road. The driver can shift from 2WD to 4WD HI at up to 72 km/h and can split the torque distribution 50/50 between the front and rear axles. It also features a neutral mode for flat towing.

Selec-Trac 4x4

Selec-Trac 4x4 is an automated system which can shift automatically between 2WD and 4WD when conditions require. This is an available system that makes life easier for the driver.

Rock-Trac 4x4

This heavy-duty part-time system features Tru-Lok electronic locking differentials, brake lock differential, and electronic front sway bar disconnect. It also comes with an off-road transfer case with 4:1 low-gear ratio to inch over difficult obstacles.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has different systems depending on the model.

Quadra-Drive II

This is the most advanced 4x4 system offered by Jeep and features a rear electronic rear limited slip differential. This is a full-time system that provides constant traction on any surface.

Quadra-Trac I

Quadra-Trac I can transfer up to 48% of the available torque to the front wheels, and comes with standard brake lock differential and 4-wheel brake traction control systems.

Quadra-Trac II

This system features a 2-speed low transfer case for improved off-road performance. It can also send up to 100% of the available power to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Trac SRT

This system is reserved for the Grand Cherokee SRT and Trackhawk. It is designed to perfectly distribute the massive torque generated by these models and provide enhanced performance on track.

2021 Jeep Compass, 2021 Jeep Cherokee, and 2021 Jeep Renegade

Available on the Compass, Cherokee, and Renegade, Active Drive is designed with both efficiency and performance in mind.

Active Drive

Active Drive shifts automatically between FWD and 4WD when conditions require more traction. The system is therefore more fuel-efficient on clear roads, but it provides the grip and stability expected from a Jeep when needed.

Active Drive Lock

This system adds a low range and neutral mode for flat towing. It is designed to cross the harshest terrain with ease.
